Was wondering what the pro’s and con’s of a bait casting reel with magnetic brakes verse one with a variable brake system. I have both systems and both do the job fine. One obvious advantage, to me anyway, is that with the magnetic system you can adjust them really quick from the outside. The variable system requires you to remove the plate and adjust the plastic pins, taking a little more time and hassle.

I ask the question because I’m thinking about getting a rod and reel designated for fishing jig and pigs, both pitching them and casting them to deep water ledges. Would one system be better than the other? Don’t know if it really matters, but wanted other opinions. Thanks!!

While the Centrifigul brakes may be a little more of a hassle I prefer them because theyre really  more effective in my opinion. However  alot of the newer reels offer both in  a duel brake system and they're pretty cool. You kinda get the best of both worlds.

I have last years model of the Rick Clunn Signature Series rod & reel.  It has the duel braking system & I really do like it.  The duel system helps me with the old bird nest problems.  I know from now on the duel system is the only reels I'm buying.

There are many types of centrifugal brake systems and there are many types of magnetic brake systems.  So it can't be said that one is superior to the other.  However when comparing Diawa's Mag Z's casting performance to that of Shimano's VBS casting performance.  The Mag Z comes out on top in terms of distance in just about all applications.
