If you love topwater you've got to walk the dog. Good video gives you the basics.

Member Posts: 177 | Another important thing about walking the dog is that the further the lure is, the more aurthoritative your rod tip movement must be. When the lure gets very close, you have to soften up on your rod tip. This keeps the walking lure moving equally in it's zig zag pattern.

A rod with a soft tip helps. Change up your cadence and let the fish tell you what they want. Also Jimmy Houston always using a split ring on his Spooks and walking lures.

If you really want to be an expert at it, and not take the easy way out, you can tie a loop knot instead of using a split ring. lol

yeah like h2oman said a soft tip helps with walking and hooksets on spooks, sammys lunker ,punkers, skitter walks.....and on. when i fish topwater i use a cranking type rod so you can let the rod load up before you hook the fish...to me this is important because when i see that fish hit i tend to get very excited and swing! so a soft rod helps me land more fish

I have problem with the hookset on the softer crank rods, if the fish aren't hooking themselves. So I prefer an X-fast tip but will settle for a fast tip. It's for varying the amount of walking the dog. Working a sammy with a finesse walk is much easier with a quick tip. The wider glides is easier with a softer rod tip, but with some practice X-fast tips can do the job just fine. In fact longer casts benefits with the X-fast tips, making walking the dog with less effort. When you're running the dog, the X-fast tip has more authority in controling the fast pace and cadence. The last thing that X-fast tip can do is a double twitch to one side, before changing over to the other direction. Of course, it's not walking the dog anymore.
