10/26/09 Water temperature was 50 degrees. It was a bright, sunny day with moderate wind. The fish were not in a biting mood today. We tried crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and wacky-rigged Senkos with no luck. We eventually resorted to drop-shotting with watermelon black flake Pro Senkos, got 4 bass total. The biggest was 2 1/2 lbs. They were all taken near the drop-off next to the town-owned camp in about 4 ft. of water.

Went out for a few hours today, and I'm glad I did! The weather was not very nice today, there's a front coming through after dark, so it was overcast and fairly windy. The water temperature was 46 degrees. I tried throwing a Staysee 90 jerkbait at first to search for the fish without luck. I then started casting a black spinnerbait with a single black colorado blade with a black grub trailer, and the fun began! On my first cast on a wind-blown point I felt a tap while it was helicoptering down in about 10 feet of water, so I set the hook and had a nice fight with a 3 1/2 lb. largemouth. I then caught 3 more smaller bass on the same point until the action stopped. My best bass of the day came on a drop-shot rig a little while later. I tossed it near a fallen tree about 100 yds. from the same point, and didn't even have to work it before I felt it get picked up. She ended up being 4 lbs 8 oz. I snapped her pic and put her back, sure would like to catch her next year after she fattens up on the alewives! It started getting really windy then so I wrapped it up, but I'm pretty happy with my results today after only fishing for about 3 hours. Late fall fishing rocks!

It was 40 with a steady rain today, and a cold front coming in, so i decided to try my luck. The Champion is shrink-wrapped, so I took my canoe instead. It was kind of tough to control in the wind, but it turned out to be worth it. I got a 3 lb 8 oz bass on my black spinnerbait(same one as above) off of the main point on the lake in about 10 ft of water. It tried a Lucky Craft pointer for a while with no takers in the same spot. After about 4 hours on the water I was getting pretty soaked, so I decided to head back to the ramp and hit the docks I would pass on the way back. I had the wind in my face the whole time, so I decided to try a blue/black laminate 5" Senko on a 3/32 zappu inchi wacky jig on spinning tackle just because it would be a little easier to throw. I caught a few small bass in about 2-3 ft of water, so I then thought I would check out the water a little deeper than the ends of the docks. I threw the Senko into the wind in about 8 ft of water and started slowly lifting and shaking it while retrieving it. I felt a tic, set the hook, and had a pretty good fight on my hands. She ended up being 5 lbs 1 oz. Weighed her, snapped a few pics, and let her swim away. There are nice bass in Chebacco!

The weather today was partly sunny with a light wind from the South, 50 degrees. I won a Tru-life 5" swimbait on a contest on Facebook, so I thought I'd give it a try. My rig was a Dobyns 735C rod with a Shimano Curado 200DHSV reel spooled with 20 lb fluorocarbon line. I've never really thrown hard swimbaits previous to today, so I figured today was just for learning how to use it. First cast out, I pumped it once and a 2 lb bass smacks it hard. About every 5th cast after that I either would catch a big pickerel or a big bass. I caught them in anywhere from 4 ft to 20 ft of water ALL DAY LONG! My best bass of the day was 4lbs7oz, and lots of 3-4 lb pickerel. I am officially a fan of swimbaits, I'll never go fishing without one tied on this rod again! I am just amazed at all the action I got in cold water today!

Today was overcast, 36 degrees and a light wind was out of the northwest. Water temperature was 33 degrees. It snowed two days ago, and the edges of the lake are icing over. It took a while for me to figure out what the bass wanted today. I tried a spinnerbait with a colorado blade, a couple of different jerkbaits, a drop-shot rig, a zappu inchi jig, and a Silver Buddy with no luck. I tried slowly retrieving a 5" swimbait but that didn't work either, so just for laughs I decided to pump the swimbait up to the surface, and then let it drop like it was dying while reeling it in back to the boat. All of a sudden I had bass interested. They started chasing the swimbait, trying to nail it when I brought it to the surface. I had a lot of near misses, but I caught a 2 lb and a 2 1/2 bass too. I stayed on the main point of the lake trying to get more takers until the sun went down. One thing is for sure, it is simply not true that bass will only take a slow methodical retrieve in cold water. I could not get any action until I used an aggressive, fast, and frantic presentation. Looks like swimbaits are a pretty good winter bait to me!
